The Longest Running Shows in the West End

We all have our favourite theatre productions, whether they’re a fun sing along jukebox musical or gripping stage play. However, whilst some shows come and go, there are a special few that continue to live on in our hearts and in Theatre Land that we simply can’t get enough of. Read on to find out all you need to know about the longest-running shows still playing in London’s West End today.

The Mousetrap

Not only is this the longest running play in the West End, but the longest running show (ever!) in the world. The stage production of Agatha Christie’s ‘whodunit’ The Mousetrap has played over 26,000 London performances and is now in its 64^th record-breaking year – 39 of which have been at its current home at London St Martin’s Theatre. The show has also been seen around the world by nearly one million people and broken a number of box office records at its various tour venues.

Les Misérables

Les Misérables is the West Ends longest running musical and has been seen by over 70 million people in 44 countries around the world. This year the iconic London production will celebrate its 30^th year, adding another box-office record to its long list of theatrical achievements. The timeless story is set in France during a dramatic period of the 19^th century and delves deep into the lives of its characters and the love and despair they endure during such a tragic time.

The Phantom of the Opera

Musical lover or not, just hearing the name of this dark, romantic production will leave the theme tune stuck in your head for days! Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mesmerising tale of the mysterious Phantom looming behind the scenes of a Paris opera house first opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre in October 1986, which still remains the musical’s home to this day. Also embarking on its 30^th record-breaking year The Phantom of the Opera has been performed over 12,000 times and seen in over 30 countries around the world.

The Woman in Black

This truly terrifying play has been spooking audiences at the Fortune Theatre since the 1980s and been seen by more than seven million people. Now in its 25^th year, the spine-chilling Woman in Black continues to draw theatregoers to the theatre for a unique experience that is unlike any other seen on the stage around the world.
