Alzheimer’s Society announces actor, Sir Jonathan Pryce, as Ambassador

Award-winning actor, Sir Jonathan Pryce, has today expressed his determination to help people affected by dementia, following his appointment as an Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador. One in three people born today will develop dementia in their lifetime. The acclaimed actor will use his voice and influence to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s Society as a vital source of support for everyone affected by dementia.

It is a cause that is close to The Crown actor’s heart, because his late aunt lived with dementia. Jonathan’s personal experience has inspired him to back the UK’s leading dementia charity who provide help and hope to people living with the condition.

Speaking about the Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador role, Sir Jonathan said:

“I’ve witnessed first-hand the effects of dementia on my own family. Having long supported the work of Alzheimer’s Society, I’m honoured to become an official Ambassador, which I do in honour of my late aunt.

“With 900,000 people living with dementia and millions more carers, partners, and families affected, helping Alzheimer’s Society end the devastation caused by dementia is incredibly important to me.”

Sir Jonathan, who was recently nominated for an Academy Award, has previously supported Alzheimer’s Society with various initiatives including Dementia Action Week and the charity’s One Million Minutes campaign.

His emergency Individual Giving Appeal during the coronavirus crisis was the charity’s most successful TV and Facebook advert ever, raising almost £1million for Alzheimer’s Society. Since 2018 he has been a regular reader at Alzheimer’s Society’s annual Carols at Christmas service.

During the month of May, Sir Jonathan is urging everyone to support Alzheimer’s Society’s Forget Me Not Appeal by wearing a Forget Me Not badge as a symbol of solidarity and as a message to everyone affected by dementia that they have not been forgotten by research, by the care system, or by the wider public.

Sir Jonathan said: “I’m proud to wear my Forget Me Not Badge to show my support for the Appeal and to help fund the life-changing support that people living with dementia, their loved ones and their carers so desperately need right now.”

Commenting on Sir Jonathan’s new ambassadorial role, Kate Lee, CEO at Alzheimer’s Society, said:

“Sir Jonathan is an acting icon, and we’re delighted that he’s joined us as an Ambassador.

“He’s already done so much to help raise awareness and funds to help people with dementia through some of the hardest and most frightening times.

“By formally taking on an Ambassador role, he will help to improve the lives of people living with dementia now, and in the future. We’re so grateful for his continued support.”
