Circus in Town: The Potteries Centre welcomed Upswing this August!

Stoke-on-Trent’s leading shopping destination, The Potteries Centre is excited to welcome Upswing, a leading UK based, multi award winning contemporary circus company. A first for the centre, Upswing in partnership with the New Vic will bring extraordinary performances and interactive workshops perfect for all the family.

Taking place on 5th – 6th August and 17th – 19th August, Upswing’s live showcase, Circus Flavours, is inviting locals to fulfil their circus dreams. Located in the middle mall next to Schuh, watch performances by some of the UK’s most talented circus artists before having a go at learning some highly skilled tricks and moves. From object manipulation, acrobatics, and aerial, discover those hidden talents with the help of experienced artists who will guide its workshop participants along the way.

Upswing’s aim is to inspire curiosity and tell new stories in extraordinary ways, striving to break new ground through performance and seeking authenticity in the representation of diverse experiences. Circus Flavours looks to push these boundaries while celebrating the art of circus performance and the creative talents and stories of diverse artists and communities.

Amy Whittaker, Centre Manager at The Potteries Centre, said: “This is a first for The Potteries Centre and we can’t wait to host Upswing and excite participants as well as passers-by with some awe-inspiring performances. We always aim to bring new and exciting experiences to the centre creating a hub for the community and this is going to be bigger and better than ever. We can’t wait to see everyone enjoying the circus performances and taking part in learning a new and exciting skill.”

Vicki Dela Amedume MBE, Artistic Director of Upswing, adds: “At Upswing, we strive to ensure our performances reach people in unexpected ways, so working with The Potteries Centre is a perfect way for us to do this.

This residency in a shopping centre is a first for Upswing and we can’t wait to show visitors the brilliant skills, creative talents and impactful stories of our diverse artists and communities, and hopefully help to inspire others through the possibilities of circus as an art form.”

Perfect for all families with children aged seven and above, this free experience allows visitors to witness a breath-taking circus spectacle as well as test their own skills and abilities. Whether a beginner or a pro, Upswing is inviting everyone to come and have a go this summer.
