Singer and Performer of the boyband ‘Five’ Scott Robinson talks about their upcoming ‘The Biggest 90s and 00s Disco’ Arena Shows and ‘Kubix Arena Tour ‘ Shows

With the charts currently an ever evolving reality by the week, with the likes of iTunes and Spotify shaping the way we consume music, Pop music’s journey within the first couple of decades into the new millennium has been fascinating to watch – pop the foundation of our mainstream musical landscape. Making their mark almost 30 years ago now with their confident, authentic, boisterous brand of pop, Five dominated the 90s UK Pop scene, hits such as “Keep On Movin” and “We Will Rock You” staples of their tenure at the top of the charts. Returning this Christmas to embark on the The Biggest 90s and 00s Disco Arena shows on Friday 13thand Saturday 14that OVO London and OVO Glasgow as well as the Kubix Arena Tour from 20thto 22ndDecember in Aberdeen, Leeds and Hull, band member Scott Robinson tells us more about what to expect.

Hi Scott, Five will embark on The Biggest 90s and 00s Disco Arena shows on Friday 13thand Saturday 14that OVO London and OVO Glasgow as well as the Kubix Arena Tour from 20thto 22ndDecember in Aberdeen, Leeds and Hull alongside fellow boybands 911 and East 17. How are you feeling ahead of the shows?

Really excited to have a year performing in arenas, it’s fantastic! We started the year in Australia doing our 3rd tour over there which was incredible, we’ve on to doing loads of festivals over here as well as a long tour over August in Denmark – we spent every weekend in Denmark doing 2 to 3 shows a weekend. It’s been a busy year, but when doing arenas with East 17 and 911, and I think Blue is doing some of the shows as well, just absolutely incredible, I’m looking forward to it.

Five’ debuted in ’97, within a near 30 year career having released 4 albums (‘5ive’, ‘Invincible’, ‘Kingsize’, ‘Time’) and enjoying chart success in the process. How was the band formed originally?

The band was put together by Heart Management who formed the Spice Girls, and lost the Spice Girls to Simon Fuller. Their quest was to put a boy band together in the same vein, so they put adverts out in The Stage Newspaper and the tagline of that was “Spice Boys”. Obviously the band were never going to be called the Spice Boys, but it was ‘that’ idea that got to them. That’s where I saw the article in The Stage, I went down to London, I was number 22 in the queue of 1000s and believe it or not, Jay (Jason ‘J’ Brown) was number 21 in the queue so I was talking to J before we even got into the band. It got whittled down to 24 people and then the rest was history. We got signed up that day, got an album deal with RCA RecordsSimon Cowell, and everything changed from that moment on.

Renowned for chart hits such as “Everybody Get Up”, “Keep On Movin” and “We Will Rock You” amongst others. How did you/how do you all approach the songwriting process?

We wrote our new album (Time – 2022) in Lockdown, obviously with not being able to perform, to get on stage to see the fans, we’ve always done the writing, we produced our whole album ourselves during lockdown, even doing vocals and bouncing them off of each other, and then eventually when they said we could meet, we released it. The songwriting process has always been something that we’re passionate about – if we’re going to sing the songs, it’s better if you’ve actually written them as well.

You’ve been in entertainment for almost 30 years now. What within this time have you learned/taken away from being a performer within the industry?

You need to appreciate every moment as it won’t last forever. I think it’s so important to live in the moment, I always practise what I preach, I always enjoy every moment, I try to now and it’s working. Sleep in the breaks, advice I would have liked to have given myself – instead of having 2 beers in a 10 minute break, I have a catnap now just to take the edge off.

What can fans expect from both tours?

High Energy from us certainly. From our perspective, we’ll tell them to ‘get up’, and tell them to ‘get down’, we’ll tell them to ‘keep on moving’, we’ll ask them if they’ve “got the feeling?’, probably talk to them about ‘when the lights go out’, and then we’ll go home and have a beer!
