In response to the impact of Covid-19 within the arts’ sector, We Are One Global Film Festival have responded to this by uniting 20 film festivals across the world to showcase a variety of works created by a talented network of filmmakers.
Directed by Grand Prix winning director Mati Diop, Atlantiques, initially curated as part of the New York Film Festival is a documentary centring on the perilous experiences of Serigne, a Senegalese migrant in search of hope and new beginnings. Serigne speaks of his turbulent attempts to cross the Atlantic, memories of his home and familiarity a painful reminder of the familial bonds he leaves behind.
Conversations between himself and friend Alpha successfully highlight their frame of mind – Alpha fearful of even attempting to leave his homeland, Serigne fearless, to him the journey imperative to his survival. Diop effortlessly draws on themes of survival, hope and friendship; concepts of life and death Atlantiques’ quietly poignant underlying battle. “There’s nothing but dust in my pockets” serves as a stark reminder of Serigne’s drive to seek a brighter future, a powerful watch.
