Penned by former poet Laureate Michael Rosen, We’re going on the Bear Hunt has proved to be a popular piece of children’s literature. With one of the most catchiest and memorable verses of the last century, the story remains timeless and effortless. As a family venture out into the unknown, they are presented with a series of perilous landscapes. With the sole aim of discovering the whereabouts of a bear, their family day out surprises, challenges and amazes as they battle the elements.

The ensemble immediately engage their audience as they joyfully march and sing their way down the theatre aisle to the stage. The title song We’re going on a Bear Hunt illuminates the space as all 4 performers beam with dynamism and stage presence. Pages of the book are triumphantly brought to life as all members of the family take over Simon Plumridge‘s wood crafted picture frame-esque design; the family home transforming into the forest and seaside showcases the versatility of the design.

Arran Glass provides the musical accompaniment for the production, performing Barb Jungr‘s music and lyrics with an air of fun and authenticity. Jess Mabel Jones, Lowri James and Gilbert Taylor all dazzle as the courageous family, capturing the imaginations of both the children and adults within the theatre with puppetry that takes on a life all of it’s own. The famous fearsome bear luckily isn’t as intimidating, with the right balance of scariness and charisma. A piece of theatre that intertwines the introduction of rhythm with a loveable narrative, We’re going on a Bear Hunt is a production that I thoroughly recommend for the family to watch! A must see!
