Avatar Me @ Zoo TV (Danish Digital) Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2021

With many opting for the staycation option this year in light of current events, the idea of boarding a short or long term flight for some at present, might appear distant. Cue Avatar Me, a digital concept inviting participants to embody the role of a real life avatar, without any prior knowledge as to who you’ll become and where in the world they’re located and you’ll be transported to.

Consider Zoom as your boarding gate, you’re given a briefing before embarking on your adventure, the next 45 minutes an intriguing and memorable 1 to 1 live streamed journey. For those familiar to gaming, you’re constantly taking on avatars, exploring new worlds, taking on missions and seeing this reality from the avatar’s perspective. Avatar Me captures this concept and brings it into the real world – the moment I initially meet and step into the role of my avatar a surreal experience.

Avatar Me is a lovely way of encouraging connection, especially during a time where loneliness has been ever more prevalent due to restrictions and the unpredictable nature of our new day to day. The experience encouraging interactivity, as the avatar informs you of your new life, guiding you on both an immediate, domestic level in the home setting before exploring the environment’s outdoor, local location. Questions and conversation are encouraged, ensuring that no two experiences are the same as you’re also in control of how the experience takes shape.

Forming part of The Danish Arts Foundation’s Danish digital series, showcasing digital based art from Denmark, and produced in partnership with Wildtopia and Teater Nordkraft, Avatar Me is an innovative way of travelling globally and learning about others in the process from the comfort of your own home. An inventive, creative experience, I highly recommend!
