The Place, London’s leading centre for dance development, creation and performance, is pleased to announce a call out for applications for Choreodrome2023.
Choreodrome is The Place’s annual residency programme for experienced makers to explore new artistic territory without the pressure of creating a finished product. Ideal for artists who have been working in a professional setting for at least three years, the Choreodrome Research Residencies allow artists to develop their own choreographic work or ideas and are suitable for artists from any discipline who wish to research an idea that has choreography or dance as a key component. Each Choreodrome research residency comprises1-2 weeks of studio time, producing support, creative feedback, networking opportunities and £2.5k to fund their residency time.
As well as offering up to 12 research residencies, each year The Place works in partnership with other organisations to offer focused support for particular practices or additional resource to explore particular ways of working. This year The Place is delighted to be providing two focused support packages, working with East London Dance to offer a Hip Hop residency support package and A+E Lab, offering a new Virtual Reality residency.
Kate Scanlan, Joint Creative Director and Chief Executive from East London Dance says: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with The Place on Choreodrome in order to create more opportunities for Hip Hop artists to create the work they want to share with the world, by offering dedicated studio time and producer support to help them to explore their ideas.”
Esteban Lecoq and Aoi Nakamura, directors of AΦE company which is the home of Kent-based A+E Lab says: “Our collaboration started because we received the Choreodrome opportunity back in 2013. 10 years later, we are honoured to be able to offer our support for fellow Choreodrome artists, share what we have learned over the past years through our innovative creations and touring some of the prestigious venues and festivals around the world. We created A+E Lab for us to share the knowledge and support other people. We hope the artist will enjoy the residency at A+E Lab – it is located at Historic Dockyard Chatham, historical and inspiring environment to work from. We are very excited to welcome Choreodrome2023 artist to our Lab and creative tech and art community!”
For the Hip Hop Residency, East London Dance is keen to hear from Hip Hop artists who would benefit from focused and specialist producing or creative support to engage in a period of R&D, as well as artists who are looking to work with their own artistic questions. This could be an opportunity for a Hip Hop artist to move their work into different contexts, for example into theatre spaces, making a touring work, or making longer form work.
For the A+E Lab residency, AΦE company is looking for artists who are interested in exploring movement and VR in their work. Artists may have some tech collaborators already for this project, and some experience of working with VR, or an interest in working with VR for the first time.

The Place’s Choreodrome residency has supported a myriad of UK-based artists who create performances. Previous UK-based artists who have been awarded Choredrome residencies for performance work that has since gone on to tour nationally and internationally includeYukiko Masui with the album made in collaboration with Sarah Golding as part of SAY, Eve Stainton’s Dykegeist, Sonia Sabri with Kathakbox and Luca Silvestrini (Protein) with worksP ortrait with a Group and Duck, Border Tales and May Contain Food.
