It’s the August Bank Holiday, and that can only mean one thing… put on your dancing shoes, gather your friends and family together and prepare to have a party like no other. As the capital prepares to welcome Europe’s largest carnival, it’s events like these that remind us of the various cultures that make the UK what it is today. Notting Hill is renowned for its celebration of Caribbean culture, and with this in mind, the Theatrefullstop Carnival Playlist looks to champion the voices of those of African and Caribbean descent and the diaspora.
First up, we have Maylee Fraser who will be performing a poem called Jamaica by Nalda Taylor-Wright.
Next, we have Donna Stewart (Director/Voice of Narrator), Regina Shirelle (Actor/Voice of Miss Cobbs), Harriett Solomon (Actor/Voice of Miss Benedict) all performing The Fattening Room by Asia Nichols.
Following on from that, we have Akeem Maull-Nicoll with his spoken word piece, Bold, Brazen and Beautiful!
Next, we have Damian Lynch who will perform Feather in Meh Cap by Rosalynd Ward and recorded by Jon Calver.
Our penultimate artist, Anniwaa Buachie will narrate a traditional Nigerian Tale called Sun, Water and Moon.
And lastly to conclude our carnival celebration, we have Marcus Joseph with his spoken word piece, Love Letter to Africa.
Thank you for listening and hope you have a fantastic bank holiday weekend. This will be an annual project curated by Theatrefullstop so hope you’ll tune in again next year!
A big thank you to My Ebony Box and BareLit Festival for support also!
