Michael Akadiri: Not Ready for This (Work in Progress) @ The Bread and Roses Pub Theatre (Clapham Fringe 2021) Review

A recipient of the 2020 Komedia New Comedy Award, emerging star Michael Akadiri is on the rise, appearances on Times Radio, BBC Radio Kent and ITV2 showcasing the comedian’s talent. Performing and workshopping new material at the Clapham Fringe Festival, Akadiri presents Not Ready for This, a look at his life as a junior doctor and other topical musings.

Akadiri is magnetic from the get go, a natural comedic talent, he has the room at ease. Presenting a 60 minute set of new material, Akadiri keeps the evening topical, balancing the heavy weighted with the more light hearted. What makes the set endearing is his humorous outlook on his role as junior doctor. This is a great way of gaining perspective on what it’s like working in these unpredictable circumstances, and from someone who can cleverly showcase this anecdotally. Akadiri’s use of observation is brilliant, he takes the familiar and makes it entertaining and provokes debate. This is where Akidiri’s strength lays, as this is his day to day. He’s able to effortlessly return back to ideas set up previously, and able to ensure a friendly rapport with the crowd.

Akadiri also isn’t afraid of looking at the more pressing issues impacting society, using his platform to highlight things we maybe need to look at and examine more so. Akadiri is confident, a comical presence and much needed remedy for our times post pandemic.
