The decision to start a family is an emotional one, a hope for many wishing to expand their own family units and ensure their own legacies in turn. The confrontation however of child loss and abortion life altering realities faced by women globally, yet quietly navigated. Highlighting the heaviness of the impact of these realities – writer, director and producer Lauren Melinda talks about Oscar 2026 qualifying short film Before You, a film painting an intimate portrait of a couple navigating the quiet grief that follows a decision rarely spoken about in public, yet carried by so many in private. Lauren tells us more about exploring this sensitive topic further, collaborating with Planned Parenthood Federation of America and what she’s learned from creating the film.
Ten years ago, the British Theatre Consortium produced a report, British Theatre Repertoire 2013, based on the most extensive and detailed dataset ever compiled on British theatre’s repertoire. The most striking finding was that, for the first time since records began, new work had overtaken revivals in the British Theatre repertoire.
A year later, BTC produced a further report, British Theatre Repertoire 2014, confirming that 2013 had not been a blip, and new work continued to dominate British theatre.
Now BTC has produced a report on British Theatre Repertoire in 2019, the last full year before the Covid shutdown, and 2023, the first full year after theatres reopened. Based on aggregated and anonymised data from 139 commercial, not-for-profit and subsidised theatres, in London and throughout the country, the report’s Ten Key Findings are:
- Between 2019 and 2023, the number of productions and performances declined but attendances rose.
- Musicals increased and Drama declined.
- New Work declined in the 2010s but formed a larger part ofthe repertoire after Covid than before. By 2023, the majority oftheatre productions consisted of new work once again.
- New Musicals increased considerably after lockdown.
- There were fewer New Plays but those there were had longerruns in fuller theatres.
- Revivals declined. Shakespeare dominated classical revivals, with a surprise winner in both years.
- The share of adaptations in the repertoire increased. After Covid, adaptations did better business in larger theatres.
- The share of plays by women increased substantially.
- The capital’s already overwhelming share of national theatreactivity increased.between 2019 and 2023.
- Contrary to popular perception, real-terms ticket prices fell
The trustees and chair of Stockroom, formerly Out of Joint, announce the theatre company’s formal closure. This follows the loss of its Arts Council of England National Portfolio status in April 2023.
The remaining assets of the company will be donated to the new writing touring theatre company Paines Plough, who will continue Stockroom’s work of supporting and championing new writing. The remaining royalties accrued from Stockroom’s past work are being transferred to The Writers Guild of Great Britain and their Writers Welfare Fund.
Mark Powell Chair of Stockroom says –
“After trialling a new writers room business model and exploring other partnerships, Stockroom’s outgoing trustees are confident that in Paines Plough & The Writers Guild of Great Britain we have found exemplars equally committed to writing and writers. Both organisations share our common goal of nurturing the valuable creative talent that fuels the nations stages. Not every theatre company can live forever. Change is essential and healthy in the theatre sector to keep our practise and programmes vital. We know this pair of beneficiaries will take the spirit of Stockroom’s brief life into the future.”

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and Foyle Foundation joined by leading actors, launched the RSC Shakespeare Curriculum, a revolutionary new way of studying Shakespeare using the latest learning technology and innovation.
The Shakespeare Curriculum is the most important development in the teaching of Shakespeare in a generation and will radically change how Shakespeare is studied and taught in secondary schools across the UK and around the world. It responds to ongoing concerns from teachers and young people about the way in which Shakespeare is experienced by many in school, with the aim for 80% of all UK secondary schools to use the Shakespeare Curriculum by the academic year 2029/30.
The first resource of its kind and free to use for all state and SEND secondary schools, it distils the RSC’s award-winning teaching approaches into a digital platform that has everything teachers and students need to teach and learn about Shakespeare, immersing them in the creative world of an RSC rehearsal room. Grounded in the techniques used by actors and directors, the Shakespeare Curriculum takes students beyond their desks, unlocking language, character and themes and fostering vital skills for school, life and work. The RSC Shakespeare Curriculum has been created with major investment from the Foyle Foundation as one of the key projects recently announced for the long-term legacy of the foundation.
