Heldenplatz @ Münich Kammerspiele Review

When Thomas Bernhard’s last drama Heldenplatz (Heroes Square) premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on October 7, 1988, it caused a public uproar. Before the play was published, carefully selected extracts of the text had been leaked to various papers and, taken out of context, led to massive protests against the play. Austria’s president Kurt Waldheim, a former officer of the SA, called the drama an “insult to the Austrian people”, and Thomas Bernhard was physically assaulted for allegedly besmirching Austria’s reputation. Bernhard’s play led to a heated debate about Austria’s role in the Nazi era.

#Genesis – A Starting Point @ Münchner Kammerspiele Review

Born in Jerusalem in 1976, Yael Ronen is one of the most intriguing directors of her generation. Hakaoh Berlin, developed at Schauspielhaus Graz, was awarded the Austrian Nestroy Theatre Prize in 2013. Common Ground, a meditation on the aftermath of the war in former Yugoslavia, was invited to the renowned Theatertreffen Festival at Berlin and won the audience award at Mülheimer Theatertage in 2015. Her production The Situation at Gorki Theatre was invited to the Theatertreffen in 2016.

Der Vater (The Father) @ Münchner Kammerspiele Review

With the rise of the #MeToo movement and angry white men who want to turn back the clock to the good old days of gender inequality, plays discussing the war of the sexes have been produced in theatres all over Germany. Nicolas Stemann, resident director at the Kammerspiele chose August Strindberg‘s first naturalistic play The Father to contribute to this discussion.

Trommeln in der Nacht @ The Münchner Kammerspiele Review

Almost 100 years ago, on 29th September, 1922, the Münchner Kammerspiele presented the world premiere of Trommeln in der Nacht (Drums in the Night) – the first play by Bertolt Brecht that was ever put on stage. Little has remained of that remarkable evening except for a few photographs and director Christopher Rüping keeps wondering what the world premiere might have looked like. Determined to use theatre as a time machine, he decides to try and recapture the spirit of the original without turning his production into a museum piece. He starts off by copying the style of almost 100 years ago, reviving the cast of a bygone era, thereby reinventing the world premiere.

Point of No Return @ The Munchner Kammerspiele Review

When Israeli director Yael Ronen began rehearsals for her first production at the Kammerspiele in July 2016, there was no play yet, only a title. The first three weeks were spent on research and discussion, mainly about relationships today and the influence of technological developments on the future of sex: dating apps, body implants and cybersex. But when David S. went on a killing spree at a shopping centre in Munich on 22 July 2016, people thought Munich had become the first German target of a major terrorist attack. Presumably, there was more than one perpetrator targeting sites all over the city. This information proved to be wrong, yet rumours and speculation spread fear and panic through the channels of the social media. After this incident, the theme of the production changed dramatically – this presumed terrorist attack became the “point of no return” in Yael Ronen’s production.

Trüffel, Trüffel, Trüffel @ The Münchner Kammerspiele Review

Eugène-Marin Labiche was one of the top comic playwrights of the 19th century. He wrote more than 175 farces, most of them focusing on the bourgeios class. Although full of dramatic devices, Labiche’s plays provided true insight into human nature and raised the genre to a new level. The best of his works include Le Chapeau de paille d’Italie (1851; The Italian Straw Hat); Le Misanthrope et l’Auvergnat (1852); Le Voyage de M. Perrichon (1860; The Journey of Mr. Perrichon); and La Poudre aux yeux (1861; “The Bluff”), which is now presented at the Kammerspiele in Tobias Haberkorn’s new translation.

América @ Münchner Kammerspiele Review

First published in 1995, “The Tortilla Curtain” (German title: “América“) by T.C. Boyle deals with the conflict between cultures and values. The first conflict targeted by the author is the paranoid fear of Southern Californian suburbanites of being overrun by illegal immigrants from Mexico . The novel exposes the human primal fear which take over in view of imaginary threats, switching rational liberals to panic-driven xenophobes. Another conflict occurs with nature, as humans push more and more into the wild countryside, trying to retain a highly regulated environment.
