Netflix announces winners of career-boosting Documentary Talent Fund

Today, Netflix announces the five filmmaking teams who will receive funding and professional support to make a short documentary on the theme of “Connection,” as part of the second year of the Netflix Documentary Talent Fund. Following a rigorous application process and thousands of applications, a shortlist of twelve filmmaking teams were invited to Netflix’s UK HQ to pitch in front of a panel of industry experts.

Brits win big at the Tony Awards!

British productions took home seven awards from the 76th Tony Awards, which took place last night at the historic United Palace in New York City’s Washington Heights.

Jodie Comer, star of BBC’s Killing Eve, won the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Playfor her role in the one-woman show Prima Facie (Lead Producer: SOLT member Empire Street Productions). Jodie won an Olivier Award earlier this year for the same role in the production’s 2022 London run. Collecting her Olivier Award in April this year, Jodie said, “Don’t let anybody tell you it isn’t possible… It might take the stars to align and for you to be met with such generous, kind, and nurturing people, but it is possible.”

ZOO’s 2023 Programme brings big names from the UK and abroad back to the Fringe

ZOO celebrate our 21st Edinburgh festival season with an outstanding programme full of fresh, innovative and spectacular performance from the UK and around the world, featuring established Fringe favourites, stunning international work and exciting, emerging new artists. Our 2023 programme of 40+ shows will be performed at our long-standing home ZOO Southside, and our stunning studios at ZOO Playground, along with site specific work at ZOO Dovecot, as well as online and hybrid work via ZOOTV, our streaming platform launched to bring light to the dark days of 2020.

Brown Girls Do It Too: Mama Told Me Not to Come @ Soho Theatre Review

The topic of sex is often shrouded in taboo, commonly associated with graphic depictions and connotations. But this only brushes the surface on an otherwise complex part of humanity. Being comfortable and true to who you are and the connections we cultivate amongst other aspects not necessarily stressed on enough. Offering a sex positive discussion and challenging current narratives, Poppy Jay and Rubina Pabani known for their award winning podcast Brown Girls Do It Too currently available to listen to on BBC Sounds present a live/dramatised version of the podcast at Soho Theatre.

We Will Rock You the Musical @ London Coliseum Review

For over 50 years now, the music of Queen has has become an integral catalogue with the rock ‘n’ roll stratosphere. The late Freddie Mercury’s unrivalled, undeniable stage presence one admired and celebrated. Inspired by the eclectic works of Queen, TV comedian, actor and writer Ben Elton would go on to premiere We Will Rock You the Musical in 2002 at the Dominion Theatre. Panned by critics, but loved by fans all over, the show would go on to become the 11th longest running musical in the West End history – a very impressive feat. Returning back to London at its new temporary home for the next 12 weeks, the London Coliseum, Elton – who also plays the musical’s leader of the Bohemians, Pop – plugs us into today’s tech-centric universe.

Tim Sheader Appointed as New Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse

The Donmar Warehouse today announce that Tim Sheader is appointed as the new Artistic Director and joint Chief Executive alongside Executive Director Henny Finch. Sheader takes up the role in March 2024 taking over from Michael Longhurst. He joins the company from Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, where he has been Artistic Director since 2007. Under his tenure, the company has won seven Olivier Awards and four Evening Standard Awards, with productions transferring to the West End and North America.

I Was Kinda the Bad Guy @ The Laughing Horse (Brighton Fringe Festival 2023) Review

A lot of the time, we don’t even realise the psychological or emotional turmoil that we’re in – often hiding behind distractions to fight away the pain. The bonds we form around us a vital factor in possibly exploring this further and healing. Delving into this further with production I Was Kinda the Bad Guy, Jaz Johnson delivers a brooding drama very honestly exploring the impact of intervention and receiving a mental health diagnosis both on the individual and those around them. The topic of mental health the sole purpose of the piece which, perfectly pitched to a Gen Z demographic.

The SAG-AFTRA Foundation (@sagaftra) is releasing The SAG-AFTRA Foundation (@sagaftra) is releasing its Legacy Collection, a series of never-before-seen, long-form interviews recorded between 1979 and 2012 with legendary performing artists and industry luminaries. The collection was captured on a variety of physical media formats and digitized during the pandemic. It contains unique interviews with influential actors and pioneering performers, including David Carradine, Cyd Charisse, Henry Fonda, Kathleen Freeman, Tippi Hedren, Dennis Hopper, Jane Russell, and dozens more. In addition, the Legacy Collection includes contemporary trailblazers who continue to perform and influence culture today.

@sadlers_wells and @breakinconvention present the Hip Hop Games on Stratford Waterfront in @queenelizabetholympicpark this summer ahead of Breaking’s inaugural appearance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games (@olympics) and the opening of Sadler’s Wells East. On Saturday 3 August from 12-7pm, eight east London dancers will compete across two teams in a hip hop dance improvisation game with a series of different creative challenges in a free event for all the family.

The Hip Hop Games is a concept born in France in 2011 from dancer, choreographer and artistic director Romuald Brizolier and is the first concept that offers a hip hop dance improvisation game staged through various creative challenges. The Hip Hop Games has since toured internationally, bringing together dancers from across the world and gaining widespread recognition.  

To continue marking Breaking’s debut in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Sadler’s Wells and Breakin’ Convention are inviting visitors to watch the Breaking Olympic finals at free live watching parties on Friday 9 & Saturday 10 August. The Breaking Olympic Watch Parties will take place at Riverside East, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with DJs from BBC 1Xtra and will include panel talks with breakers involved in the Olympic qualifiers. #arts #dance #hiphop #breaking #streetdance #krump #olympics #olympics2024

To celebrate our birthday this year on Sunday 14th To celebrate our birthday this year on Sunday 14th July, we’ll be returning with another Mindfulness workshop led by practitioner @meganmattravers to take place on Instagram Live at 1pm, this will be a 30 minute workshop focused on keeping us in the present moment. This will then be followed by a 45 minute Pilates workshop at 3:15, also on Instagram Live led by @sib_meienberg. The session is suitable for beginners, and we ask if possible, to make sure you have a yoga/exercise mat with you, and a bottle of water.
