This evening (Sunday 14th April), the Society of London Theatre has revealed the winners of this year’s Olivier Awards with Mastercard. The winners were announced at a star-studded ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall, hosted by Hannah Waddingham. A highlights package from the event will be broadcast at 10.10pm this evening on ITV1, and will be available to stream via BritBox in North America, Canada and Australia.
The biggest winner of the night was Sunset Boulevard with seven wins, including both Best Actor and Actress in a Musical for its leading duo Tom Francis and Nicole Scherzinger. Jamie Lloyd won the Sir Peter Hall Award for Best Director and the show also won Best Musical Revival. Jack Knowles took home the White Light Award for Best Lighting Design; Alan Williams won for the Outstanding Musical Contribution award for his musical supervision & musical direction and Adam Fisher won the d&b audiotechnik Award for Best Sound Design.
Survey on generative AI highlights the growing impact of new technologies on creative careers, and an urgent need for ethical development that works within copyright laws
Throughout January 2024, the Society of Authors (SoA) ran a survey of its 12,500 members and other authors, receiving nearly 800 responses on respondents’ experiences of generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems, and their views and concerns about the future impact on creative careers.
The findings demonstrate not only the deep uncertainty about the future role of generative AI in the profession, but also the impact it is already having on careers and livelihoods.
ACTORS TOURING COMPANY (ATC), the UK’s leading producer of international plays today announces the departure of its joint CEO and Executive Director Andrew Smaje after 8 years co-leading the organisation, the last six years alongside Artistic Director and joint CEO Matthew Xia.

Playwrights working under WGGB’s UK Theatre and TNC agreements will see a significant uplift in their minimum fees following successful union negotiations.
Under WGGB’s UK Theatre Agreement, playwrights will see a 10% rise in minimum fees – 6% backdated to 1 May 2023 and a further 4% from 1 May 2024. The UK Theatre Agreement has a banding system which groups theatres into three categories known as Middle Range Salary Level (or MRSL) hence the three ranges on the rate card (which you can see here).
This follows an increase in minimum fees of 6% for writers working under the TNC agreement (covering the National Theatre, Royal Court and Royal Shakespeare Company) applied from April 2023. View the new rate card here.
