Forty years ago, Alan Cumming made his professional theatre debut at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow. Thirty years ago, his Hamlet stormed the West End, and he was hailed as ‘an actor knocking at the door of greatness’. A quarter of a century ago, he was a sensation as Cabaret’s Master of Ceremonies in a production that forever changed the Broadway landscape. Stage star and pop sensation Faye Tozer will host this year’s UK Theatre Awards sponsored by Encore, set to take place on Sunday 20 October at 8Northumberland Avenue. The UK Theatre Awards celebrate the very best of theatre across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Awards are given for creative excellence and outstanding work both on and off stage, including the coveted UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre Award and the Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre accolade.

Faye  is best-known as a member of BRIT Award-winning pop band Steps, who had number one hits with Tragedy and Stomp, and sold over 25 million records worldwide. Their 10th album Platinum Collection – celebrating 25 years – reached an impressive No.1 in the official charts and they recently completed their 10th UK Arena tour.

British rap legend Nines has announced his monumental tenth project, Quit While You’re Ahead—his sixth and final album—set for release on September 27th, 2024. Alongside the album, Nines has confirmed the news of his last-ever headline show, which will take place at London’s iconic O2 Arena on Wednesday, 27th November 2024. This highly anticipated performance will mark the final chapter of his illustrious career.

The Quit While You’re Ahead announcement was revealed during an exclusive event at Magazine London, featuring an epic drone display over the O2 Arena. In tandem with this announcement, Nines has also dropped the first single from the album, Tony Soprano 3,  the final instalment in the acclaimed trilogy.

The Stage Debut Awards are today announcing a stellar line-up of guest presenters and performances from the West End’s most popular musicals for their annual ceremony, in association with ATG Entertainment. As the UK’s only awards dedicated to celebrating breakthrough theatre talent, this prestigious event shines a spotlight on the industry’s rising stars from performers, directors, writers, composers and lyricists to set, costume, lighting, sound and video design.

Some of the biggest names in theatre will gather on Sunday, September 29, at 8Northumberland Avenue, London to honour this year’s standout talent. After her own triumphant debut as host last year, legendary drag artist, performer and singer Divina De Campo returns to once again lead the ceremony. The evening will recognise 49 nominees across eight categories — all who made remarkable professional debuts over the past year.

How do you help people understand the law? For Ancient Greeks, it was making a song and dance about it. Many archaic lawgivers captured imaginations by composing laws to be sung, making them easy to remember. One of the first lectures in the 2024-25 academic year at Gresham College will explain more about the institution of legal rules in Greek antiquity Gresham College Professor of Rhetoric, Melissa Lane will give the lecture entitled Singing the Laws: Ancient Greek Lawgivers in History and Legend. Professor Lane says: “I’ve always been fascinated by the resonance of these figures of the great lawgivers from Greek history and legend. Some were possibly legendary, like Lycurgus of Sparta. Others were unquestionably historical, such as Solon of Athens. One of the things that really interests me is that these figures are not the inventors of law as such. The Greeks knew that there were laws that had evolved before these great lawgivers came along. But they celebrated these figures as having pulled together a set of laws for a given society, usually at a kind of moment of crisis and social factionalisation, creating new cultural identities that those societies could identify with going forward.”
