Levi Roots announced as new Chair Designate for South London venue Brixton House

Brixton House is delighted to announce the appointment of Levi Roots as Chair Designate, with the transition to Chair scheduled for Spring 2025. Levi, a well-known entrepreneur, musician, and a respected figure in South London, brings a remarkable combination of business expertise, artistic passion, and deep community connections to Brixton, as Brixton House continues its mission to be a vibrant hub for creativity and culture.

His journey is rooted in South London, where he rose to fame with his Reggae Reggae Sauce, which became a household name after his unforgettable appearance on Dragon’s Den. Since then, Levi has built a successful brand and inspired countless entrepreneurs with his story of resilience and innovation. His commitment to bringing the flavours of the Caribbean into UK homes reflects a dedication to cultural pride and authenticity that aligns seamlessly with Brixton House’s values.

Belongings @ Brixton House Review

A fundamental need we all share, is that needing to belong – family forming our initial foundations and place in the world. Family circumstances however something that we ourselves can’t determine, yet plays an integral part of our lives. Family, a structure that differs dependent on circumstance. An exploration of what ‘family’ looks like to three young people brought up within the care system, Tangled Feet and Rowan Tree‘s Belongings beautifully amplifies the voices of the often unheard – and contributes an honest look at the impact of these challenging circumstances.

Patricia Gets Ready (for a date with the man that used to hit her) @ Brixton House Review

When you step out of a relationship, do you really begin to grasp the emotional, psychological, spiritual and physical impacts of what you’ve experienced within that period of time, survivors of domestic abuse encountering realisations that occur over time, trauma a devastating result of the toxic bond shared and often difficult to address. Exploring this within her award winning work Patricia Gets Ready (for a date with the man that used to hit her), Martha Watson Allpress crafts an honest, open account of a woman rebuilding her life and self esteem post break-up and after a chance encounter with an ex abusive partner.

Saturn Returns @ Brixton House (Housemates Festival 2022) Review

Two years post pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement, the importance of reconnecting to one’s roots has been an important stride within a very transformational time period, generational trauma a state explored more openly now. An exploration of an Igbo couple captured from Nigeria, West Africa during the Transatlantic Slave Trade, Sonny Nwachukwu‘s show Saturn Returns draws on the historical event of The Igbo Landing, a mass suicide by the captive Igbo people in 1803 onboard a slave ship in refusal of slavery.

Writer and Performer Corey Bovell talks about his show ‘Chicken Burger N Chips’ to show at Brixton House (Formely Known as Ovalhouse) as part of their inaugural Housemates Festival

The Chicken and Chip shop has become a marker of our early 21st century high street landscape, establishments serving their local communities, they serve not only as a go to spot for an affordable meal, but also as a sanctuary – a staple for the younger generation, shaping experiences of many growing up in London. Presenting a raw and nostalgic coming of age story about growing up in South London and exploring gentrification and its impact on the lives of its youths, writer and performer Corey Bovell will debut his show Chicken Burger N Chips from the 3rd until 6th May at Brixton House as part of their Housemates Festival. Ahead of the show, Corey tells us more about exploring the show’s themes, collaborating with businesses Morley’s Chicken and Afterhours Restaurant to create the show and what it means to form part of Brixton House’s (formally known as Ovalhouse) new chapter!

Black Off @ Brixton House (Swiss Selection Live Season) Review

An outrageously funny and philosophical piece of gig theatre which incorporates an eclectic mix of performance art, live music, stand-up comedy, and video installation with smoke machine galore and plenty of white discomfort to go around. South African born, Swiss based Ntando Cele comes on as her alter white ego Zimbabwean Bianca White in a dragged-up inversion of blackface. Refreshing and a must catch on until Saturday 12th March at the brand spanking newly revived theatre Brixton House, formerly Ovalhouse, they’ve opened the season strong with Black Off.
