The Society for Theatre Research is delighted to reveal the shortlist for the Theatre Book Prize 2022. Judged by director Jatinder Verma, National Theatre archivist Erin Lee and theatre critic Paul Vale on a panel chaired by STR Committee Member Howard Loxton, the shortlist includes six titles ranging from the history of Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre to the candid account of the early career of actress Eileen Atkins.

The search is on for the UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre, with venues around the country invited to compete for this accolade ahead of this year’s UK Theatre Awards. Applications, which are now open to all UK Theatre member venues until 1 July, will be judged on how theatres can demonstrate they are welcoming in three distinct areas; ‘place’, ‘people’ and ‘programme’ – looking at the building itself, the relationship with audiences and everyone interacting with the venue, and the creative work offered.

It was announced yesterday at a special Royal Theatrical Support Trust (RTST) ceremony that the winner of the RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award 2021, Denzel Westley-Sanderson, will direct a new production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest – in a co-production between English Touring Theatre (ETT), Leeds Playhouse and Rose Theatre.

At a ceremony last night at the Prince of Wales Theatre hosted by Jodie Prenger and Tom Read Wilson, the winners of the 22nd Annual WhatsOnStage Awards were announced – the only major theatre awards decided entirely by the theatregoers themselves.

The 12th annual theatre awards took place online on Scenesaver for the second year whereby anyone could view the ceremony live from their own homes for free. Presented by the director of the Offies – Geoffrey Brown, from Battersea Arts Centre the award ceremony receives hundreds of submissions and recognises talent from otherwise unseen talent, companies and shows. It is a sprawling beast of an awards ceremony with more than 40 awards which feels apt given it reflects the Off West End landscape in London, the UK and beyond. Founded in 2011 to shine a light on the importance and value of Off West End theatre.

The Theatre Artists Fund has delivered 1,670 emergency grants in a seventh round of giving, providing vital aid to freelance theatre workers impacted by the recent Covid surge and subsequent show cancellations.
