This staging of East is East stars its very own writer: Ayub Khan Din. This play first premiered in 1996, was later adapted into an acclaimed film by Ayub himself and has a long history of awards. It portrays the life of a British Pakistani family living in Salford in 1971. George Khan has emigrated to England in 1936, married a local Englishwoman with whom he had seven children and now attempts to raise them into the Pakistani culture.
Alice in the Underground is a rock and roll musical loosely based on Alice in wonderland, following 14 year old Londoner Alice as she escapes the “River Bank” estate in a quest for love. The production was made and performed at the Chickenshed Theatre and was originally performed in 2003 as part of the 40th anniversary of the venue.
The Hotel is an aptly named piece of immersive theatre based in a Hotel at venue 47/49 near London Bridge. The piece was created by JackInabox Theatre Company who were founded in 2011.
Mimetic or mimesis is defined as being ‘the imitative representation of the real world in art and literature’ (Oxford Dictionary) and this is a word that most definitely captures the essence of The Mimetic Festival, which is set to transform the atmospheric Vaults in Waterloo from Monday 17th- Saturday 29th November.

Amo’s Theatre most recent production brings us Molière’s classic French comedy: Tartuffe. This play tells us of this religious hypocrite who manages to enter into the sinful life of Orgon, the owner of a speakeasy masked as a church, who seeks redemption for his past life. Orgon is deluded by the apparent virtues of Tartuffe and places him above his wife and children, welcomes him into his house and so we are left to witness the damage this devout liar inflicts on this family’s life. The advantage of this play is that its words and message of falsehood and hypocrisy seem to be timeless, it is easy to make sense of it in the modern times or, in a more creative twist, to set it in 1929 in Louisiana as director Chris Lawson chose to do.
Nancy Meckler has created a fantastic adaptation of Strindberg’s Dance of Death. This wonderfully black comedy is a roller coaster of emotion from start to finish!
An artist renowned for his pursuit of perfection, Michael Jackson remains one of the greatest performers, if not the greatest to have ever lived. The spearhead for fairness and equality within the music industry, Michael is responsible for helping to pave the way for the MTV generation, breaking down racial barriers that had initially seen him amongst other black american artists refused airplay. It’s hard to believe that even Michael had fought for his music to be heard, considering his legendary status that we now take for granted! As you read this now, I’m sure your currently humming along to your favourite Michael Jackson song!
Split into two separate dance pieces, Brazilian dance company Grupo Corpo brought classical ballet to the Sadler’s Wells Theatre with a difference – Latin rhythmic influence. It was really enjoyable to watch the dancers gracefully perform such technical movements, whilst grinning and enjoying the beat of the Latin music. It brought a fun element to a usually very serious style of movement.
