She is a Place Called Home @ The Vaults (Vault Festival 2020) Review

Family for all of us takes on a very personal meaning, our view of the family construct differing from the next person. Drawing on her views of sisterhood, arguably one of the strongest familial bonds, writer Esohe Uwadiae presents She is a Place Called Home; a considered portrait of a bond tested by the expectations of their mother as well as their proud domineering father.

Playwright Esohe Uwadiae talks about her show ‘She Is A Place Called Home’ showing at Vaults Festival 2020

Esohe Uwadiae

Being bicultural, you often find that you’re constantly observing the world through two lenses; quietly balancing two cultures side by side whilst trying to figure out your very own identity. Drawing on her very own experiences of being both Nigerian and British heritage, writer Esohe Uwadiae presents She Is A Place Called Home, an exploration of having dual nationalities and sisterhood. Ahead of the show’s performances, Esohe speaks to us about taking part in this year’s Vault Festival, having the show developed as part of VAULT Festival’s New Writers Programme and offers advice to aspiring playwrights!

RawTransport™ @ The Vaults (Vault Festival 2020) Review

Escapism in some form or other balances out our predictable routines – whether that be via art, spirituality, vice, technology, a getaway – the need for a break from the everyday crucial for us all to function. Cue Electrick Village‘s brief VR installation piece RawTransport™, a quietly ambitious exploration of escapism and how this in itself further deepens our own sense of self. Made possible by the accessibility of a headset and headphones, how we potentially holiday or ‘escape’ in the future could shift dramatically and not involve the chaos of packing and check ins.

The Permanent Way @ The Vaults Review

Timeless and troubling The Permanent Way is a damning diagnosis of a flawed system that undermines the individual’s voice. David Hare’s 2003 analysis of power and aftermath considers the individual experience in a system that puts financial success above all. Striking contrasts between those who suffer and those who make the problematic vindictive rules, Hare questions the status quo and poses the argument that perhaps it is not a broken system but a fully functioning and deeply exploitative structure.

Galvanise (Preview) @ The Vaults (Vault Festival 2019) Review

Friends are your family away from home; a network relied up and formed usually within our formative years. Often told secrets our own families are not aware of, friends are a great source of support, impacting positively towards our own mental health and well being. These are probably one of the strongest bonds we’ll form within our lives. Rascal Theatre‘s Galvanise celebrates this notion, the power of the friendship bond particularly during our teenage years.
