Within the past year, the way in which we’ve consumed live art has changed; due to the closure of arts venues, creatives within arts industries have had to adapt their work digitally, online platforms providing a space for audiences to connect. A response to our current climate, the Electric Dreams Online Festival showcases a mixed programme of web native theatre, music and immersive experiences exploring the use of various digital technologies from social media to Virtual Reality (VR). Curated by award winning immersive and interactive curators and co-founders of Crossover Labs Mark Atkin and Tom Miller, both tell us what we can expect from the online festival!
A collaboration witnessing the renowned Pina Bausch Foundation and influential dance company École des Sables restage Pina Bausch’s seminal 1975 work The Rite of Spring, the company were due to embark on an international tour, their first showing originally scheduled for March and due to take place in Dakar, Senegal. Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, and the global lockdown that would follow, École des Sables’ base would form the setting for a final filmed rehearsal on a beach nearby. Captured by filmmaker Florian Heinzen-Ziob, he tells us more about filming Dancing at Dusk – A moment with Pina Bausch’s The Rite of Spring ahead of the global lockdown.
In a matter of months, the theatre industry have had to quickly adapt to how they engage with their audiences post the Covid-19 pandemic. An industry whereby live art is integral, the digital space has become new ground for platforming thought provoking creative works and reaching wider audiences. Launching their House to House online initiative, Brixton House in collaboration with LIVR showcase a series of plays filmed in 2018 – Random Selfies by Mike Kenny and WHITE and GREY by Koko Brown. Being bicultural, you often find that you’re constantly observing the world through two lenses; quietly balancing two cultures side by side whilst trying to figure out your very own identity. Drawing on her very own experiences of being both Nigerian and British heritage, writer Esohe Uwadiae presents She Is A Place Called Home, an exploration of having dual nationalities and sisterhood. Ahead of the show’s performances, Esohe speaks to us about taking part in this year’s Vault Festival, having the show developed as part of VAULT Festival’s New Writers Programme and offers advice to aspiring playwrights!
Sexuality is a component of ourselves that makes us who we are, it’s a personal preference that only we should have the right to own. However when there are laws and societal expectations placed stopping you from living your truth, this can often leave many feeling isolated with nowhere to turn to. Addressing this topic further in her debut play The High Table, Temi Wilkey talks to us ahead of the show about the importance of exploring LGBTQ+ issues and culture, how both the Bush Theatre and Birmingham Repertory Theatre helped realise her story and her journey towards co-founding ‘Pecs, The Drag King Collective’.

Belief systems whether explicit or implicit are a part of our daily lives, religion and spirituality for many sources of security. We all connect with readings, quotes, scriptures, imagery, artefacts and ritual differently – it is inevitably up to us to determine how best to navigate our own lives. The crux of his work Idol, writer and performer Jamal Gerald asks a very important question – as a ‘Black, queer and Catholic in a Caribbean household, which higher order do you bow down to: Queen Bey or white Jesus?’ The answer? The former! Described as the ‘patron saint of empowerment’, Jamal has more of a connection with the superstar. Ahead of the show, Jamal talks to us about debuting the show last year at Transform Festival ’19, what audiences can expect from the show and offers advice to aspiring writers and performers!

Exploring this further in her current show NOTCH, writer and performer Danaja Wass draws from her own personal story of leaving Croatia to start a new life in Ireland for a better future. Ahead of the run, Danaja talks to us about exploring the show’s themes, how she approached creating the show and what audiences can expect.
A star on the rise, Award Winning Comedian Mo Omar has proved himself within the comedy circuit, having taken part in various competitions and events, most notably having performed on Harry Hill’s Clubnite on C4, and the Pleasance Comedy Reserve at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2019. Making an appearance at this year’s Vault Festival, Mo tells us more about how Canadian-Somalian rapper/poet/singer-songwriter K’naan (known here for his World Cup anthem in 2012 Wavin’ Flag) has inspired him and more!
What we’re beginning to witness more of on our stages is the importance of presenting a wide range of stories from various perspectives, and this needs to continue to further enrich the theatre experience. Damilola DK Fashola’s Fragments of a Complicated Mind places the complexity of a black woman’s thoughts centre stage, a culmination of storytelling, direct address, dance and poetry bringing the thoughts and feelings of our protagonist to the fore. Ahead of the show, we spoke to Damilola about how she approached creating the show, responses towards the show’s debut last year at the Omnibus Theatre and Theatre503, and what she’d like for audiences to take away from the show!
Drawing parallels with our current societal landscape where we’ve witnessed youth violence on the rise, writer and performer Kalungi Ssebandeke travels back in time to Georgian England to give voice to little known boxing superstar Bill Richmond. Created as part of his drama school training, Kalungi presents Black Terror at this year’s Vault Festival from 28th January until 2nd February.
