Now more than ever, conversations revolving around mental health are crucial, particularly within men. In a society that has so often taught us to keep quiet, and deal with emotional and psychological issues on our own, we’re now having to reverse that way of thinking in order to better improve well being and have much needed, open conversations. Exploring mental health within his latest dance-theatre piece Elephant in the Room, choreographer and actor Lanre Malaolu talks about his approach towards creating the show, how various organisations including Talawa have supported his work and what audiences can expect from the show.

Theatre Programme Co-Ordinator Will Mytum talks about teaming up with Voila! Europe to host the debut A Piece of the Continent Festival at Tristan Bates Theatre

Will Mytum

At the end of this month, the UK will supposedly leave the EU – nearly three years post the referendum. What’s been apparent from this significant decision is the vote’s exposure of our divided nation, a division further worsened by the ambiguity of the leaving process. This feeling of ambiguity is defining how we approach the 29th March, we’re left unsure as to how this will truly impact all in the future. A decision that has left many feeling alienated, it’s incredibly important to celebrate the contributions made by international residents within the UK. In a time of division, it’s crucial to acknowledge our rich cultural heritage, one influenced by artists, practitioners and theatremakers globally. Ahead of the debut A Piece of the Continent Festival at the the Tristan Bates Theatre, Theatre Programme Co-Ordinator Will Mytum discusses this exciting new festival in collaboration with Voila! Europe.

Playwright Qianqian Chen talks about Reallusion Theatre’s UK debut of Safety Net at the Etcetera Theatre

IMG_1535
Relationships aren’t easy, particularly long distances ones. Trying to maintain a sense of connection is a tough ask, for some, lack of contact works, for others not so much; it’s dependent on the circumstances of the couple. We also have our own take on what it means to ‘belong’, a human need intrinsically and extrinsically fulfilled, or perhaps not. A state some finally find peace with, for some, something they continually search for. This also feeding into how we perceive our ‘cultural identities’, a factor shaping our daily experiences and how we view the world. Qianqian Chen’s non-linear narrative Safety Net explores these facets of daily life, a complex narrative presenting a series of ideas, created by a US and UK based collective of artists. Qianqian discussed further about the show’s UK premiere.

Ovalhouse Executive Producer Stella Kanu talks about this year’s #CONNECT: Black Women in Theatre event

Stella Kanu

We’re living in a time where changes within the industry are proving incredibly significant; conversations around making theatre accessible and a lot more diversified are greatly prominent. There’s a feeling that within the next few years that theatre will truly reflect its audience, both on and off stage. It’s a very exciting time and offers hope to many who perhaps wouldn’t have thought theatre was a space for them, due to the feeling of theatre being an elitist art form. Many initiatives are shaping our landscape, one of which – #CONNECT: Black Women in Theatre offers a space for black creatives within the theatre industry to contemplate various issues to further advocate change. Founder and Executive Producer of the initiative, Stella Kanu tells us more about the event’s second year!

Playwright and performer Lekhani Chirwa talks about the debut of her show Can I Touch Your Hair? at this year’s Vault Festival

Can I Touch Your Hair?

A topic receiving greater prominence within wider conversations is that of ‘cultural appropriation’; an issue regarding taking an aspect of a culture unfamiliar to an individual, an aspect of great significance and commodifying it for financial gain or trivialising it due to its aesthetic. Playwright Lekhani Chirwa explores this issue in her debut play Can I Touch Your Hair? Ahead of her 2 date performance at this year’s Vault Festival, Lekhani talks about the show’s themes, working with Ovalhouse, HerStory Festival and Blacktress prior to the Vault Festival and what audiences can expect.

Writer & Performer Shey Hargreaves talks about her latest show ‘Sick’ to show at the King’s Head Theatre

Shey Hargreaves
Having celebrated 70 years last year, the NHS is one of the UK’s most crucial institutions; offering free
medical care to residents in need. A system used by many of us, we’ve all have our own experiences of the service that have gone on to shape our opinions of it. With issues such as funding, staffing, mental health and the UK leaving the EU in late march dominating the headlines, it can be easy to forget the voices of those who work behind the scenes to make the NHS what it is today. Having worked on the frontline of the EAU (Emergency Assessment Unit) for four years, Shey Hargreaves offers an insight into how working in a high pressure role where she’d often support families going through tough experiences has ultimately helped to create her latest show, ‘Sick’, which is currently on tour.

Co-Artistic Director of Frozen Light Theatre Lucy Garland talks about their latest multi-sensory Production, The Isle of Brimsker

Lucy-Garland

Currently on a UK tour, The Isle of Brimsker has captured the imaginations of many. A tale of a lone lighthouse keeper joined one day by a mysterious runaway, Frozen Light’s mission to create accessible work rings true. Having met in 2006 whilst studying the Applied Performance Masters course at the University of Kent, both Lucy Garland and Amber Onat Gregory created their very own form of multi-sensory theatre for audiences with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) and this would become the blueprint for their theatre practice today. Mid-tour, Lucy talked to us about how her time as a support worker has shaped her practice, creating the The Isle of Brimsker specifically for audiences with PMLD and what audiences can expect from the show.
