Indhu Rubasingham steps down as Artistic Director of Kiln Theatre

Kiln Theatre today announces that Indhu Rubasingham will step down as Artistic Director of the company, leaving early 2024, having led the company for over a decade.

Indhu Rubasingham said today, “I never had an inkling of the journey ahead when I was first was appointed. I immediately felt the responsibility, but what emerged was both challenging and exhilarating, an experience I will carry with me for the rest of my life. It has been an immense honour to be Artistic Director of Kiln Theatre. I have learnt and grown so much over these past 11 years. It has given me the privilege and opportunity to work with many brilliant people, who have contributed to the successes of Kiln; a theatre with a mission that is heartfelt and held by the whole team. I am deeply grateful to the Board of Trustees chaired by Sita McIntosh and former trustees and Chairs for their support and guidance and care of Kiln, and also to the many donors and Arts Council England who have allowed the Kiln to flourish and achieve all the things it has. It is a wonderful space, that welcomes us in to immerse ourselves in different worlds, narratives and experiences. I have been very lucky to be part of its story. It now feels the right moment to pass the baton and herald the next chapter of this unique theatre.”

Black Love @ Kiln Theatre Review

Black Love is a joyous musical for grownups that manifests radical self-love and unapologetic storytelling serving some home truths to our white counterparts. The whole energy of the piece is playful with an upbeat black feminism which sends a strong message of solidarity far and wide.

Snowflake @ The Kiln Theatre Review

Boris Johnson winning a winter election couldn’t have come at a better time for Mike Bartlett and his London debut of Snowflake at the Kiln Theatre. Aptly titled one might say to fit Bartlett’s flare for goading the political discourse du jour. Though generational tension bubbles away, the title doesn’t live up to the boomer vs millennial hostility one might have expected, if that’s what you’re after just log on to Twitter.

When the Crows Visit @ The Kiln Theatre Review

Anupama Chandrasekhar’s play is an onslaught of misogyny, violence against women and shock tactics, which leads to an unsettling, if a little glib, two hours of drama. Ibsen’s Ghosts is one of the entities that inspire the narrative, particularly focusing in this instance on a father’s sins. The true story of the girl gang-raped in Delhi, India in 2012 is another inspiration. It’s a heavy evening, filled with bold decisions and potent symbolism.

The Half God of Rainfall @ The Kiln Theatre Review

Inua Ellams strikes again with his signature rhythmic flare and sharp analytical eye. The Half God Of Rainfall merges Greek and Yoruba mythology in a humorous but poignant 80 minute piece that explores, masculinity, sexual violence and colonialism.

The Son @ The Kiln Theatre Review

“They fuck you up, your mum and dad.” Anyone who’s ever had a parent can relate to Philip Larkin’s famous opening to This Be The Verse. Larkin goes on to write “but they were fucked up in their turn”, a line that drips with the stark reality that damage is quite often an inherited gift. I mention this because bequeathed melancholy is pertinent to French playwright Florian Zeller’s work.
